Medical acupuncture is considered a significant aid for those trying to reduce their body weight. It plays a supportive role in the overall effort of the individual and can be adjusted to fit any dietary program that is deemed suitable for the case. It is a complementary method alongside diet and exercise, helping to achieve the goal without much difficulty or pressure.

The therapeutic suggestions for weight loss in acupuncture include auricular acupuncture and body acupuncture, which are sometimes combined for better results.

In auricular acupuncture, two small needles are placed on the ear’s auricle, specially designed with a semi-transparent adhesive so they remain discreet. They do not cause pain and stay in place for 15-17 days, and the patient can easily remove them at any time.

Body acupuncture, which is considered a more comprehensive therapeutic option, involves placing needles in various areas of the body, including the ears, for about 20 minutes. Most often, it is combined with electroacupuncture, where some needles placed in key areas of the patient’s body are connected to a special electroacupuncture machine for greater stimulation, resulting in the production of specific substances and promoting lipolysis.

Both body acupuncture and auricular acupuncture are carried out in sessions, which are typically done every week or every other week, respectively. Each therapeutic program is selected and tailored to the patient’s needs and medical history, which is why the number of sessions may vary.

The action of acupuncture involves regulating hormones and general substances circulating in the blood that are recognized by the hypothalamus as anorexigenic or orexigenic, thus controlling our behavior toward food. Specifically, acupuncture can support an individual in the weight loss process by:

  • Reducing appetite
  • Increasing the feeling of satiety
  • Reducing cravings for sweets
  • Limiting binge-eating episodes
  • Contributing to psychological enhancement and stress reduction caused by the dieting process
  • Restoring imbalanced metabolic pathways
  • Addressing local fat accumulation.

Therefore, medical acupuncture works in a specific way and is complementary—it does not replace diet or exercise. The patient’s active participation is essential. With coordinated efforts and repeated sessions, a person can easily and effectively reach their desired weight.

With the therapeutic acupuncture program, which is tailored to the individual’s specialized needs and medical history, we also provide nutritional advice that can complement any dietary program you follow, as well as some counseling/psychotherapy sessions if you wish.
