What is Mesotherapy for Musculoskeletal Conditions, or Localized Focal Therapy? It is a non-traumatic therapeutic technique in which active biological or pharmaceutical substances are injected. In the form of “micro-injections,” substances with triple action (anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and muscle-relaxing) are injected beneath the skin. The substances are injected with multiple small needles in strategically chosen points of the affected area, depending on the issue. Where is mesotherapy applied? Mesotherapy is applied to adults of all age groups who suffer from musculoskeletal problems. Specifically, it is used for the following conditions:
  • Cervicalgia (neck pain)
  • Lumbago (lower back pain)
  • Tendonopathies and overuse syndromes
  • Sports injuries
What are the benefits of this treatment? This technique has been applied for many years in major orthopedic centers in European countries to treat musculoskeletal pain. Clinical research and a significant number of studies have shown that mesotherapy helps significantly in reducing acute or chronic pain. It is proven to be an effective treatment, achieving specific therapeutic action on areas of maximum sensitivity. Benefits include:
  • It is a safe procedure, with no observed side effects.
  • It is a painless technique because the needles are very thin, and the pain when they penetrate the skin is minimal.
  • The technique does not affect the body through pharmaceutical substances in the systemic circulation.
  • It avoids the common and often annoying side effects of conventional pain medications.
What do we gain from mesotherapy over other techniques? Because mesotherapy is applied locally (at strategic anatomical points), it results in slower diffusion of the substance, leading to longer-lasting effects. It is a painless and safe therapeutic technique, provided it is carried out by a specialized orthopedic professional, who ensures hygiene standards, correct application, and, most importantly, the selection of the appropriate pharmaceutical substances for each case. In simple terms, The advantage of local injections is straightforward. When we take a medication, it contains an active substance in micrograms. Oral administration follows a natural path in the body: it will be broken down or not by the stomach, and some of it will be excreted by the intestine without being absorbed. A larger portion will be broken down in the liver, and an even greater portion will be excreted by the kidneys. Only the remaining amount will be spread throughout the body. It is clear that the small portion that reaches the problem area often is insufficient for relief. In mesotherapy, the doctor uses the medication and places it with micro-injections close to the area with the issue. This makes the treatment more efficient and the body is not burdened with unnecessary processes (breaking down, absorbing, excreting) of biological substances. Are there side effects from mesotherapy? No undesirable side effects are observed. Rarely, mild swelling at the injection sites or a small bruise (hematoma) may appear, which disappears within the first 24 hours. How many sessions are required for mesotherapy? The number of sessions varies depending on the condition and its underlying pathology. Generally, results are noticeable from the second session, and most cases require 4 sessions. Each session lasts about 10 to 15 minutes and does not interfere with the patient’s daily activities. The frequency of sessions is usually once a week, depending on the response.
